Cracked Declares Mas Oyama among 7 with Real Mutant Superpowers

Posted by invizweb on July 3, 2008

Real Name: Choi Yeong-eui, later changed to Masutatsu Oyama

Superpower: Super-Karate!

Masutatsu Oyama was born in Korea in 1927 and later moved to Japan, where he studied karate. Unlike most famous martial artists, Oyama is not famous for his movie roles, where stunt men and clever editing can make anyone look like a badass.

No, Oyama preferred a different sort of theater. He used to have live public demonstrations where he would fight and kill a bull with his bare hands. Just because it bears repeating, let’s write that again: He could kill a bull with his hands. If you want to know how idiotically hard that is, we cordially invite you to go out and punch a bull in the face. Go on, we’ll wait here. OK, we’re not really waiting since whoever just went out to try that isn’t coming back.

Fox News airs altered photos of NY Times reporters

Posted by invizweb on July 3, 2008

Media Matters for America reported:

Summary: During a segment in which Fox & Friends co-hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade labeled New York Times reporter Jacques Steinberg and editor Steven Reddicliffe “attack dogs,” Fox News featured photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe that appeared to have been digitally altered — the journalists’ teeth had been yellowed, their facial features exaggerated, and portions of Reddicliffe’s hair moved further back on his head.

On the July 2 edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends, co-hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade labeled New York Times reporter Jacques Steinberg and editor Steven Reddicliffe “attack dogs,” claiming that Steinberg’s June 28 article on the “ominous trend” in Fox News’ ratings was a “hit piece.” During the segment, however, Fox News featured photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe that appeared to have been digitally altered — the journalists’ teeth had been yellowed, their facial features exaggerated, and portions of Reddicliffe’s hair moved further back on his head. Fox News gave no indication that the photos had been altered.

After putting up the photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe, Fox & Friends also featured a photograph of Steinberg’s face superimposed over that of a poodle, while Reddicliffe’s face was superimposed over that of the man holding the poodle’s leash.

Below is a screenshot of Fox & Friends featuring the photo it used of Steinberg, with the original photo on its left. Comparing the two photos, it appears that the following changes have been made: Steinberg’s teeth have been yellowed, his nose and chin widened, and his ears made to protrude further.

Banned ‘Shrooms Making Life Wholesome One Year at a Time

Posted by invizweb on July 3, 2008

Thanks to Gary Baddeley at Disinfo

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor for Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The “spiritual” effects of psilocybin from so-called sacred mushrooms last for more than a year and may offer a way to help patients with fatal diseases or addictions, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday.

The researchers also said their findings show there are safe ways to test psychoactive drugs on willing volunteers, if guidelines are followed.

In 2006, Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and colleagues gave psilocybin to 36 volunteers and asked them how it felt. Most reported having a “mystical” or “spiritual” experience and rated it positively.

More than a year later, most still said the experience increased their sense of well-being or life satisfaction, Griffiths and colleagues report in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

“This is a truly remarkable finding,” Griffiths said in a statement. “Rarely in psychological research do we see such persistently positive reports from a single event in the laboratory.”

The findings may offer a way to help treat extremely anxious and depressed patients, or people with addictions, said Griffiths, whose work was funded by the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse.

“This gives credence to the claims that the mystical-type experiences some people have during hallucinogen sessions may help patients suffering from cancer-related anxiety or depression and may serve as a potential treatment for drug dependence,” Griffiths said.

“WTC hero police dog” to be cloned

Posted by invizweb on July 3, 2008

James Symington and Trakr were among first search-and-rescue teams to arrive at WTC in 2001. Trakr helped locate last human survivor of attack.

If you’re going to clone a dog, it might as well be a hero dog.

A German shepherd named Trakr, a hero of Ground Zero, will be replicated as a detection dog in a bizarre cloning experiment announced Monday.

Trakr and his master, a retired Canadian police officer named James Symington, were among the first search-and-rescue teams to arrive at Ground Zero.

Braving horrific conditions, the pair helped locate the last human survivor of 9/11 under some 30 feet of unstable debris.

“Once in a lifetime, a dog comes along that not only captures the hearts of all he touches but also plays a private role in history,” Symington wrote in his winning essay in a contest to find the world’s most “cloneworthy dog.”

The canine, now 15, suffers from a degenerative neurological disorder that impairs the use of his back legs. The disorder may be linked to exposure to toxic smoke at Ground Zero, experts say.

The Best Friends Again contest is run by BioArts International, a company that claims to have the sole worldwide license for the cloning of dogs, cats and endangered species.

Forget Viagra, Eat Watermelon

Posted by invizweb on July 3, 2008

Gabriel Gache, Science News Editor of Softpedia reported:

According to a new study carried out at the College Station’s Texas A&M Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center, the watermelon could soon take Viagra producing companies out of business since it contains chemicals that have effects similar to those of the blue pill, thus increases libido.

“The more we study watermelons, the more we realize just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural enhancers to the human body. We’ve always known that watermelon is good for you, but the list of its very important healthful benefits grows longer with each study,” said Dr. Bhimu Patil, the leader of the study.

“The citrulline-arginine relationship helps heart health, the immune system and may prove to be very helpful for those who suffer from obesity and type 2 diabetes. Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it,” Patil added.

Watermelons are part of a great variety of fruit and vegetables containing so-called bioactive compounds, also known as phyto-nutrients, able to determine healthy body responses. Lycopene, beta carotene and citrulline are only few of the well known compounds found in watermelons and are catalogued as bioactive chemicals. Citrulline for example, is able to relax blood vessels, which is exactly what Viagra does.

As citrulline is metabolized it is transformed into arginine, an amino acid that helps improve the health of the circulatory system and that of the immune system. Better still, the consumption of watermelons has no side effects, although it has the disadvantage of not being as target specific as Viagra.

US’ Bday Present to Nelson Mandela: removal from the US terrorism list (after North Korea of course)

Posted by invizweb on July 3, 2008

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported:

Last weekend he was the guest of honour at a huge concert in London to mark his 90th birthday.

More than 64,000 people packed Hyde Park and millions watched the concert on television around the world.

But last weekend when former South African president Nelson Mandela was soaking in the musical tributes, he was still on the US Government’s terrorism watch list.

The internationally revered former South African president was officially regarded as a threat to US national security because of his long association with the African National Congress.

Even the North Korean Government managed to get itself dropped from the list before Mr Mandela.

In April this year US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had expressed her embarrassment at having to wave in people like the foreign minister of South Africa and former leaders like Nelson Mandela.

That was an embarrassment shared by Amir Woods from the Institute of Policy Studies when she spoke to National Public Radio in the US.

“It is absolutely a travesty that Mandela, that really all of the leaders of South Africa have to get a special pass to be able to travel to the US because of these travel restrictions,” Ms Woods said.

“So the Bush administration has quite rightly moved on North Korea to remove North Korea from that list of terrorists.”

“But all these decades, since the end of the Apartheid era we still have South Africa on, especially the African National Congress including Nelson Mandela, on that list of terrorists.”

5,000 + Year Old Neolithic house found during British dig

Posted by invizweb on July 3, 2008

The British Broadcasting Corporation reported:

Archaeologists have found the site of what they believe is one of England’s oldest houses.

The Stone Age house was unearthed at Kingsmead Quarry in Horton, close to Windsor Castle, and is thought to be more than 5,000 years old.

Archaeologists also found flint tools, arrow heads and a bronze-age pin on the Berkshire site during the excavation.

Dr Alistair Barclay of Wessex Archaeology, said it was a rare discovery.

He said only about a dozen Neolithic or Stone Age houses had been discovered in England and the Horton house was one of the most complete examples yet found.

Lucha Report for 7/2 (new site feature)

Posted by invizweb on July 3, 2008

Thanks to Kris Zellner

Hijo del Fantasma stated yesterday that he is on cloud nine right now being a 25-year-old co-holder of the CMLL Trios Titles and winning the Generacion 75 Torneo Cibernetico last week. He went on to say that he has great momentum right now and wants a shot at either Atlantis’ NWA Lt. Heavyweight Title or Rey Bucanero’s CMLL Lt. Heavyweight Title. Fantasma was asked about how his contemporaries feel about his sudden jump up the cards and he said that he takes advantage of any opportunity that comes his way and that they shouldn’t be jealous just motivated to put themselves in that position as well. Fantasma said that Hector Garza is playing a huge role at this time of his career and is giving him key advice on what to do and what not to do.

Shocker was asked yesterday about the fans lately booing him on shows instead of cheering him since he is a tecnico and he said that he is the same whether it be tecnico or rudo. Shocker said that if the fans want him to be on the rudo side of things then he would do it because their opinions matter the most. Shocker also knows though that Los Perros del Mal have a big fanbase and that they shouldn’t be put in the same area as the regular fans because of their prejudice. Shocker also talked about his losing to Atlantis on Sunday in their match for the NWA Lt. Heavyweight Title and he said that he wants another match against him but this time in a caballera contra mascara match since taking Atlantis’ mask would be the ultimate trophy for his career. Shocker also called out long-time rivals Rey Bucanero & Ultimo Guerrero saying that they are on notice as well and he wants their hair and mask respectively. Shocker then talked about returning to TNA and said that he would be very appreciative if they wanted to book him again and that it will probably happen soon since there is a working agreement between EMLL & TNA.

Speaking of TNA, Ultimo Guerrero told the Mexican press yesterday that he enjoyed his trip so much that he would like to work there regularly maybe even permanently for a few months so he could travel the US. UG said that he would still work for EMLL at times if this happened but he feels that at this time of his career he needs to branch out and to seek new horizons along with setting new goals to achieve. UG was also taken aback by how different TNA was than EMLL and that he was blown away by how good they handled their business saying that he was going in with some trepidation. He went on to say that the matches are shorter than he is used to but it means that he has to work harder to give the fans what they want. UG then promised again to bring the World X Cup back to Mexico because they are the best in the world.
