Gamera, despite its weaker script and average editing was a classic viewing experience. Although there were horrific scenes and a perfectly tense setting, the campiness was high. When navalmen announce “Giant Turtle Spotted” like it’s an everyday occurrence in the opening minutes, you know it’s going to be filled with much hilarity. The endng may as well have been written by Garfield the Cat. The monster itself although very goofy looking was quite swanky; early on it was presented as having a personality in the grey area, and not just a perpetually angry creature. Gamera lives by its own set of rules, and so does this movie.
