The gore in Sleeping Corpses was kept to a minimal of the usual disembowelments, though there were gratuitous scenes of partial and full nudity.  What makes the film groundbreaking for its time was not its zombie plot, but its foreshadowing the Satanic Panic.  Less than 10 years after this film’s release, law enforcement agencies, mental health professionals, the mainstream press, and other institutions launched a campaign against a “Luciferian conspiracy” which cost the livelihood and freedom of many Americans who were innocent of the crimes they were accused of.  I encourage all visitors of my site to read more on it, especially of the West Memphis 3.  Fans and media academics alike should watch this film on the basis of its biting commentary.
