The second Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a fun film. Contrasted with the mellower first movie, which used subtle dread and an ominous atmosphere to create a nauseous gut feeling, this sequel was a black horror-comedy which used much louder mechanics to create suspense. The film was also somewhat of a social commentary from the Sawyer family’s Reaganomics jokes to the excesses (especially in bravado) of the characters. Tom Savini’s makeup and special effects as well as director Hooper and Jerry Lambert’s music were all phenomenal. Do not expect Gone with the Wind here. Instead imagine a somewhat more intelligent weekend horror, except with chainsaw duels and surreal feasts.
