Fools’ Gold Opinion and Editorial BOXING DAY SPECIAL: On The Rules of Engagement: Face Punching vs Leg Kicking (and the Lack Thereof)

Posted by invizweb on December 26, 2009

Hello folks.  I   have an almost full-time retail job now (anywhere from 25-33 hours a week with 9 hour shifts, unless there are long lines) and am a part-time student (7 hours of classes each week over the course of 3 nights with an hour or so of homework for each class at least). Thus I lack the time to think.  However, I was watching some YouTube, and thought about a conundrum:

American Kickboxing, which spun off from  American Full-Contact Karate is a combat sport that prohibits the use of kicks or any attacks below the waist.

whereas Full-Contact Karate from Japan usually prohibits Face Punching.

Thus my latest poll question, if you were paid to fight in a week’s time notice and you are given the option of either being handicapped by taking a match which either bans kicks to the leg, or a bout which forbids face punching, which would you rather take?

Eddie Fatu (Jamal, Umaga) Passes Away at Age 36

Posted by invizweb on December 4, 2009

According to the Figure Four Weekly/Wrestling Observer site, Eddie Fatu who wrestled as Umaga, Jamal of 3 Minute Warning, and O.G. Ekmo, has passed away at 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.

I wasn’t very comfortable when Armando Alejandro Estrada appeared into the ring to confront Ric Flair and then introduced the world to his “Samoan BullDozer” Umaga. He seemed like a caricature. A racist throwback to times passed. To be honest though, I did not find hsi work as Jamal that exciting, and I did not see his work in Music City Wrestling (where WWF management had high prospects for him), FMW, or his apparently incredible run in All-Japan. Also, I thought he stiffed Flair that night. However, as time went on, the gimmick grew on me. Umaga was a scary archetypal “monster” who played the role perfectly crushing jobbers each week until John Cena stepped in. His series of matches where he carried Cena were very good.  His biggest career match was the Wrestlemania XXIII match against Bobby Lashley with Vince McMahon’s Hair on the line vs Donald trump’s Hair.  His last match was last Saturday in Sydney during the Hulkamania Tour.  Ken Kennedy was his final single match opponent. As a man born into the Pro Wrestling business, he treated it as such with utmost respect. He will be missed. I give my condolences to his friends, family, and loved ones.

The Invizible Web Season 4/ The Mexipan Power of the Hour Episode 3 (26) : My Insomniac Friend!

Posted by invizweb on December 1, 2009

(C) Joe Nolan

On this episode of the Invizible Web, I interviewed  Fortean Times contributor, Disinformation World News senior correspondent, and freelance MMA blogger, Joe Nolan.  We compare life in the Motor City and Music City.  We discuss how Joe started writing with Fortean Times, hooked up with the Disinfo Crew, and prepare against Austin Gandy’s episodic Discordian barrages.  Finally we talk MMA and the Martial Arts: Who are some of his favorite fighters, GAMENESS, and what he really thinks about PRIDE compared to the UFC.

The opening song was Dick Justice’s “Cocaine.”

The second song was Joe Nolan’s “Walkin’ with the King.”  It is part of the King album.  Download it here with other tracks.

The third song was Joe Nolan’s  “The Night Comes.”  It comes from the Blue Turns Black album.  You can listen to it here on his Myspace Music page.

The closing track was Joe Nolan’s “Dead Man’s Song.”  It comes from the Blue Turns Black album.   You can also listen to it or buy it here on his Reverbnation Page.

Mike Coughlin’s Half-Guarded Truth (11/23/2009): Karo Parisyan and a Growing Problem Within MMA

Posted by invizweb on November 23, 2009

Mike Coughlin posted this very well-written, mature, and thoughtful article on the Figure Four site.  In this blogger’s opinion, it is the best written article on the sport this year.  I hope Mike’s articles can be incorporated in a Best American Sports Writing or similar anthology. Former Guest Fights Tonight (possibly on CBS)

Posted by invizweb on November 7, 2009

(C) Roxanne Modafferi

Roxanne Modafferi was a guest on my show last fall (2008).  The episode in question is: The Invisible Web Episode 21 (0302) – Fighting 63 in Japan.  Tonight she will be facing one of the premiere female fighters in the world, Merloes Coenen on the StrikeForce Fedor vs Rogers undercard.  Her fight may or may not be televised due to time constraints. In 2007 , Roxy beat Merloes to win the K-Grace Tournament, in Japan.  At that time many consider Merloes to be the “female Rickson Gracie” due to her numerous tournament wins.  We here at the Invizible Web (and MMA-Blitz) wish Roxy a good fight and know she will kick Merloes’ ass again.
