Alan: From my friends at the American Sambo Association (ASA).
The ASA and our partner group in Russia, the FKE, have joined forces to assist the Travel Channel with filming on location in St. Petersburg, Russia!
The Travel Channel crew and host Dhani Jones (described below) spent 10 days filming Combat Sambo training at the FKE training center as well as the Suvorov Military Academy. We don’t want to give away the scoop on the show, but rest assured this will be one of the best displays of Combat Sambo to come to American television. Featured in the episode (which is scheduled to air in either the last week of May or first week of June) is NFL linebacker Dhani Jones, FKE Head Coach Alexander Barakov, NYCS Head Coach Stephen Koepfer and many others.
There are plenty of surprises to come as Dhani travels throughout St. Petersburg and trains Combat Sambo! How does Dhani do? Is he able to hang with the big boys in Russia? Tune in to the Travel Channel to find out! Learn more about the show at www.travelchannel.com

My coach in the background. (C) Bess Greenberg/The New York Times
It was born in the aftermath of the Bolshevik revolution and remained largely a state secret until the collapse of the Soviet Union.
It is called sambo, a Russian acronym that stands for self-defense without weapons, and it is a martial art that combines striking, submissions, throws and weapons disarmament.
Popular in Russia and the former Soviet republics, sambo was relatively unknown in the rest of the world. But over the last five years that has slowly changed in the United States with the increased popularity of mixed martial arts, a sport that counts a number of sambo experts among its elite fighters.
Two such fighters, Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski, will participate in a mixed martial arts event Saturday in Anaheim, Calif. Emelianenko, considered by some to be the best fighter in the world, will take on Tim Sylvia, the former heavyweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Arlovski, also a former U.F.C. champ, will square off against Ben Rothwell, an American who has dabbled in sambo.

(C) American Sambo Association
Long-time friend, Coach Stephen Koepfer of the American Sambo Association, discusses the sweet Soviet science of SAMBO. Who is the Coach, and his American Sambo Association, you may ask? What is SAMBO, and when did it develop and arrive in the US? Where is SAMBO and the Tri-State MMA scene (of NY, NJ, and CT) heading? How was he involved with Human Weapon? Find out on this episode.
